WHAT'S YOUR PURPOSE?
Many years ago, I heard a preacher say ' a person without a purpose is like an octopus on roller skates'. At first I laughed when I thought about the mental image,( I mean think about how clumsy that would look😄) then I actually took in the meaning, and panicked! I felt like that octopus, like my life was heading in no particular direction - everywhere and nowhere at the same time.
The oxford dictionary defines purpose as the reason for which something is done, or created or for which something exists.
Going through life can be quite confusing if we don't know the reason for which we were created or what we are meant to be doing with our lives but the truth is finding that reason is a process.
For me that process has been longer than I thought, I'm still at it but I have a lot more clarity.
So, I'd like to share with you guys a summary of my new improved understanding of purpose :
I've broken it down into 2 categories:
Our overall purpose
1. I believe our primary purpose is fellowship and relationship with God.
This is my personal belief and I know not everyone will ascribe to it but I appreciate the fact that you respect it. Thank you! ❤️ Hubby puts it brilliantly '' There's a deep desire and longing that humans have and only God can fulfill it! Most times people turn to drugs, alcohol etc to fulfill this desire. But no amount of drugs, or alcohol or addiction can fulfill it. '' To this I say Amen'.
Now, to all my beautiful people out there who don't believe in the existence of God/Supreme Being, I put it to you this way, you were created to love and be loved. Mind you, those of us who believe in God, believe that He is LOVE - so I guess in a way, we are all connected by LOVE.
2. We were created to have relationships with each other :
I always wondered why the saying 'No man is an island' was coined? I guess it was simply because we realised that we needed each other for our very existence. We depend on each other for moral, emotional, physical, psychological, spiritual and even financial support because none of us is self-sufficient. Our very survival hinges on us depending and supporting one another.
Our individual purpose
1. Your purpose is to work towards becoming your best self
We are all blessed with gifts and talents , I guess the sensible thing to do, will be to find out what they are. This process can be quite slow, but it's definitely worth the time and effort required. Through it, we start to discover who we really are. The self discovery journey is an absolute must because it shines a bright light on our overall purpose. When we find out what are gifts are, we go to work to make a success of them.
People say they are happiest when they actually use their gifts to make a living. Let's face it though, we live in a world which doesn't always permit us this luxury, we have bills to pay so we work hard everyday just to make ends meet - leaving us with very little time to find and hone our talents/gifts...but where there's a will, you'll certainly find a way. Keep at it, don't give up, your gifts will find a way to serve you.
2. Your purpose is to contribute in some way to make the world better
For me this is what I call the big picture! This is the point where we experience the most growth. When we move away from looking after our individual interests to improving the lives of others. Where we use our gifts/talents to change lives and most people who are 'successful' say, this is where they get the most fulfillment!
In conclusion, you were created to experience life in all it's glory. To experience the joy - sadness, the ups - down, the struggles and breakthrough. Our purpose is to experience life!!
I'd love to hear your take on this topic, please kindly share x
